SUMMER SPRINT: Guide To [Audiobooks]

Bree’s Audiobbook Testimonial (lol):

Okay, so it took me a really long time to give audiobooks a try. I was honestly kind of stuck up about reading physical books, but last August I got an Audible subscription (and then later switched it for a Scribd subscription) and got hooked on audiobooks. Since I’m a huge music listener it was a little hard to give up my ever-present tunes, but once I did it was easy. I was already used to having a constant stream of noise and now I was finishing books off of my TBR left and right. I really can’t recommend audiobooks enough!

How to Listen:

There’s a couple different ways to listen. Below we’ve broken them down into their basics, so you can the pick one best suited for yourself. Bree currently uses Scribd, and Tree utilizes her library.

Favorite Audiobooks:

BREE: To list a few…

• Heretics Anonymous by Katie Henry: So much sarcasm! This narrator is a gem. He really bring Michael to life in all his sarcastic glory.
• Mariana Zapata Novels (the Wall of Winnipeg and Me and From Lukov, With Love): The slow burn is painful in these, and the narrators are amazing.
• Sourdough by Robin Sloan: I don’t know what it was about this book & narrator, but it left me in wondrous haze of awe and a glee.
• Autoboyography by Christina Lauren: This story is so cute, and the narrator really brings Tanner to life.
• The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo: YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS AUDIOBOOK. The author is a renown slam poet and her perfect syntax and exemplary performance is not to be missed.
• Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson: This mystery is spooky and delightful and is pulling us into an epic unknown conclusion.

TREE:

• The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: Idk how to describe this (basically true will all of Maggie’s novels), but I listened to the audiobook twice in three months and cried at the end. It’s just a beautiful story and the audiobook narrators are great! There are two narrators, one who voices Sean and one who voices Puck.
• Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid: I literally wanted to drive just so I could listen to this one. It’s a full cast and it’s amazing. I also cried at the end. I want to re listen to this now.
• The Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater: Not going to lie, I did not love the narrator at first, but now I realize that his creepy voice is PERFECT for this series.
• Talking As Fast As I Can By Lauren Graham: If you are a Gilmore Girls fan, I highly recommend it. Lauren narrates it herself and she is hilaiorus. At one point, she even “calls” her dad and he is recorded in the audiobook.

Tips and Tricks:

• If you have NEVER listened to an audiobook before, Tree recommends starting with a book you have already read. You already know the story, so it eases you into the medium.
• Listen to your audiobooks on faster speed that 1x. A lot of narrators read slow and it can make the book drag. By increasing the speed to 1.25x-1.5x you move through audiobooks quicker without loss of audio quality.
• Listen during tasks where your hands and eyes are busy but your mind (and ears) are free. (i.e. while doing chores, or driving)
