FAVORITE READS OF THE MONTH: April

We consume so many books in a month, that we don’t always get the chance to talk about all of our favorites. So, we’ve decide to set aside a monthly post specifically for talking about our favorite reads that would have otherwise flown under the radar.

I consumed many, many audiobooks this month and even a few ARCs. But since I flew through most of the audiobooks really fast, I’m instead going to talk about Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. It actually took me a minute to get through this book, but only because it’s so atmospheric and I was determined only to pick it up when I had chunks of time to get completely absorbed. Elizabeth Acevedo’s writing is so illustrative and relatable, especially when it’s written in verse (like CWYL &  the Poet X). I always feel like she’s able to get across more meaning with less words. Anyways, Clap When You Land is about two sisters who find each other only after their worlds have simultaneously imploded, when their father dies in a tragic plane crash. One sister lives in New York. The other in the Dominican Republic. Neither knew the other existed. Now with their father’s double life out in the open, they must come together and discover what it means to be sisters and how to move past the hurt left by their father & his absence. Clap When You Land is a story of grief, sisterhood, and the ties that connect us all. Camino and Yahaira are both realistic characters that you really feel for. (I legit teared up near the end.) And as always, Acevedo paints beautiful visuals with her vivid descriptors. I especially enjoyed all of the island life chapters!

So April was an odd reading month in that I read a lot of books and a lot of good books, but for some reason cannot decide on a favorite, especially a favorite that I do not plan on writing a full review for. But we are going to go with Today Tonight Tomorrow (or TTT) by Rachel Lynn Solomon. Even though I might still write a full review for this one so don’t mind this post if I do. I read this book in three hours and in one sitting which for me, there is no higher praise. I like my sleep okay? This book takes place over the course of 24 hours and follows two “enemies”. Rowan and Neil have been competing with each other since freshman year for everything from grades to becoming student body president (it was a tie last year and they are co presidents much to their chagrin). I’m not going into a ton of detail here because this is a fun one to know very little about, but basically they end up spending a lot of time together and working together for a common cause and their hatred of each other becomes a little less clear…I had so much fun with this one and appreciated some of the nuance of both characters. There are also a TON of Star Wars references. So basically this book has everything I need in a book. If you like YA contemporary books that are so much fun, but have some depth I recommend you check this one out when it releases.
