So the Graphicsathon Reading Challenge that I participated in back in February (read my wrap up here) hosted a special summer event from July 11-17, which I obviously had to participate in. I even wrote a TBR this time…not that it ended up helping my mood reader brain all that much. Originally, I was hoping to average a book a day, with a total of 7. But life got in the way, and I ended up only finishing 4. I will say it is a vast improvement over the bleak first two weeks of July, where I read absolutely no books! Anyways, I enjoyed each and every one of these reads!! Yay for graphic novels!
Completed Reads
1 – Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier
This was the perfect read to start off with. I loved the cheer squad setting and I enjoyed the friendship/relationship between the MCs. I also appreciated the way it handled LGBTQIA+ conversations and reps. Lastly, and on a completely bias note, was I loved the art style and the color palette! So pretty and soft!!
2 – The Lost Hero: The Graphic Novel by Robert Venditti
It was really fun to see this story translated to graphic novel format, especially after reading the novel format so many times. You always wonder what pieces will get rearranged or cut but I didn’t really feel that happened with this one.
3 – The Son of Neptune: The Graphic Novel by Robert Venditti
On the other hand, there are so many smallish detail I feel like got cut from this one. (Maybe there are just more fights that have to be trimmed down??) But I could also just be that I am a big Percy Jackson FanTM and have internalized this book more thoroughly than Jason’s book.
4 – Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga by Sam Maggs
I truly loved the art style of this one!! Initially I thought it was weird it was marketed as manga but it makes sense now. Unlike some graphic novel adaptions, this one translated really well from its source novel. I don’t feel any loss in story quality. Plus, I enjoyed seeing all the characters drawn out better than my imagination could ever attempt.
Thanks for reading! What’s been your latest graphic read?
xoxo, Bree
