BLOGTOBER DAY FIVE: The Spooky Scary Book Tag

We found this tag over on The Bookcheshire Cat, and it was too perfect to not add to our Blogtober lineup! And by too perfect, we mean it was a spooky reading tag we hadn’t already done in four years of participating in Blogtober. Find more Blogtober posts here!

What goes bump in the night? Name a book that has legitimately scared you while reading it 👀

Bree: I don’t know if scared is the right word, but I was definitely creeped out by all the messed up happenings in Mexican Goth by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. If you know, you unfortunately know. *shudders*

Tree: I wasn’t scared while reading this book per se, but I had the worst nightmare I’ve had as an adult after listening to the audiobook so I’m going to have to say As Good As Dead (the third in the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series) by Holly Jackson.

Jack O’ Lanterns and Classic Costumes: A book you always reach for during Halloween time 🎃

Bree: I don’t actually have a go-to grab, but every year I do make a spooky-inspired TBR to tackle. Check out this year’s here!

Tree: I said it in the other tag we did, but The Scorpio Races. Aside from this one I don’t read any book every year.

Black Cats and Magic Mirrors: A book you love that is laced with superstition and/or magic. 🐈

Bree: One of my absolute favorite systems of magic was created in The Magicians by Lev Grossman! It’s just such a scholarly, nerdy way of using magic and the visuals the TV show created to go along with the book descriptions were stunning!!

Tree: I recently read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and it was a cozy and chaotic delight!

Witch’s Brew: Favorite witch character in any book/series 🔮

Bree: It’s honestly a tie between Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service and Eva from Eva Evergreen, Semi Magical Witch, and that’s most likely because they remind me of each other so strongly. I am weak for a coming-of-age witch stories, okay?!

Tree: I’m just going to have to say the three chaotic child witches in The Very Secret Society of Irregular WitchesObviously I loved Mika, but the children made the story what it was.

Ghouls and Ghosts: A book that still haunts you to this day (good or bad) 👻

Bree: Every time I time think about literally anything from Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaeffer. I viscerally cringe, but only because I end up remembering when the main character flays her own arm while “her nerves are turned off.” But like, MY NERVE ENDING CANT BE TURNED OFF, and my imagination was only too happy to hyper-fixated. Anyways, I’ll probably finish that series…one day…maybe…

Tree: I am currently being haunted by Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn. I can’t stop thinking about this book. In the best way possible and I will not shut up about it any time soon!

Haunted Graveyard: You’re all alone in a haunted graveyard, you get ONE book to give you comfort, which is it? 💕

Bree: My ultimate comfort read(s), that could likely distract me from a cool, unexplored graveyard would have to be The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black! I just loveeeeee when Jude gets stabby. 🙂

Tree: Well no book would be able to distract me from my surroundings because I get distracted very easily, but probably a good historical romance would be the best bet for a distraction.

In the dead of night: Pick a book with a black cover 🌙

Bree: Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

43263680

Tree: Blackout by Dhonille Clayton et al.

Thanks for reading!

xoxo, Bree & Tree
